Walk as Jesus Walked

By admin | August 29, 2008

During the month of August we have been learning what it means to “walk as Jesus walked.” We are learning this from the last words of Jesus as He shares with His disciples the most important things He wants them to remember when He is gone. We discover these words in John, chapters 13-17. We have finished chapters 13 and the first part of 14. Now is a good time for a checkup. See how your life is measuring up to the standards Jesus set for us:

Serving.

Jesus wants us to have an attitude of service rather than wanting to be served. Life is about others, not us. We are to think about the needs of others and how we can help ease the burden for what others are going through.

Accepting.

God loves the world. God sent Jesus to the world to show the world what love really meant. God sends people into our lives so we can show them this same love. Many of the people God sends into our lives will not be like us. These people will not think like us. Their attitudes will not reflect Christ. And their behavior will go against many of the standards we have set for ourselves on how to live. Because these people are different our tendency will be to judge. Yet the call of God for us is to accept them just like God did us when we were far from God. When the people God sends into our lives accept Jesus, then God can deal with how He wants to change them. That is not our job. Our job is to accept them and point them to Jesus.

Loving.

Are people learning how to love others because of how you love them? Or are people getting the wrong impression of how Jesus loved? People in our neighborhoods, our homes, our places of work, in  restaurants, the places where we visit, people we encounter will only get a picture of Jesus through us. Are we giving the right picture? 1 Corinthians 13 provides a good description of what love is all about. Get this passage in your mind to help you live out loving others as Jesus loved us.

Believing.

When we focus on our present circumstances we start to worry. This is a sure sign we are not trusting God. We learn to trust others as we spend time with them. God wants us spending time with Him—reading His Word and talking with Him. As our knowledge of God grows and our trust develops to the point we recognize God is in control—not circumstances—God can work through us to touch others with His power.

Where are we strong? Praise God for helping you in this area. Where are we weak? Ask God to give you the strength to live more like Him.
