God is Our Friend

By admin | September 29, 2008

God wants to be our friend.  What an amazing concept we are learning about in John 14.  The key we discovered was abiding or remaining in God.  We learned that as we remain in Christ we bear fruit—evidences that we are a child of God—and we have an incredible sense of joy that can get us through anything we are facing.

Since being a friend with someone is a two-way street we want to communicate and “hang out” with God as much as God wants to be with us.  Spending time with God is critical as well as “checking in” with God as we go about our daily life.

When I was at a conference last year I picked up a book that had an acronym that has helped me communicate with God.  Along with the acronym the author gave an example to show how it can work.  Let me share it with you:

S=Scripture.  “What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim upon the housetops.”  Matthew 10:27

O=Observation.  If I am not hearing Him in the darkness, what will I speak in the light?  If I am not hearing Him whisper in my ear, what will I proclaim on the housetops?

A=Application.  What a great word!  The scripture reminds me to not only talk to God in prayer, but equally important is to hear Him in prayer!

P=Prayer. “Dear Jesus, help me to hear you today!  I want to be still that I may hear Your marching orders for my day, my week, for my life.  Speak Lord!  Your servant is listening!”

As we read God’s Word we can be looking for things: lessons to be learned, examples to be followed, promises to be enjoyed, and a chance to get to know Jesus better.  As we see these things in scripture we can ask ourselves “how will I be different today because of what I have just read?”  When we answer that, we can pray that God will guide us and help us live out what we are learning.  God has chosen to be our friend.  Joy and peace are the gifts God gives us when we choose to be God’s friend.
